PROJECT DESCRIPTION

A quarter-long in-depth study of contemporary building enclosure systems, the project examined Herzog & de Meuron’s Messe Basel as an example of an innovative exterior. Moving beyond the precedent, the projected and proposed enclosure system extracted the architectural and structural principles of Messe Basel, reconfiguring and creating an altogether new facade design. The hyperbolic paraboloid, a doubly-curved surface, defines the surface geometry of Messe Basel; compressing the scale of the original surface and redefining its modular dimensions, the hypar surface is adapted to a discrete surface.
